Fat grafting is an alternative to filler injections. Since the patient’s own tissues are used, fat grafting does not cause allergic reactions.
Fat grafting is done in two parts. In the first part, fat is grafted from the patient’s donor area (abdomen, thighs or buttock). Then the fat is cleaned and homogenized and injected into patients wrinkles.
The grafted fat may be injected into facial lines, hand wrinkles, breasts or the nipple area.
After the fat is injected there is a possibility that it won’t anchor immediately and relocate under the skin. The surgeon does all that s/he can, to decrease the possibility of irregularities, but it cannot be entirely guaranteed. The problem can be improved by massaging the area, but sometimes a repeat procedure may be necessary.
The recovery process lasts up to a month, during which swelling, decreased sensitivity, and colour changes of the scar area may occur. These symptoms will recede in couple of weeks. Wound tapes are removed 5 to 7 days after the procedure. We recommend to sleep on the back and put a higher pillow under the head in the first 3 or 4 days after the procedure.
Compared to filler injections the results of fat grafting last longer. Also the quantity of material, which can be used as a filler is much larger. At the same time, the results may disappear in 3 to 6 months on patients who have high metabolic rate. To achieve the best results with fat grafting the procedure may need to be repeated.
The grafted fat is preserved in a freezer in ArtiaClinic and can be injected within a year from the initial grafting.
