The main reason why people decide to have abdominoplasty is dissatisfaction with the shape of their abdomen which they have failed to change with diet and exercise. Abdominal muscles have often become loose and flabby and a pillow of fat has formed on the abdomen. The problem can be successfully improved by removing excess tissue surgically.

Most frequently, abdominoplasty is sought by women whose abdomen skin and muscles have become loose after childbirth or major weight loss and have not returned to their initial position. The stretch marks developed during pregnancy or major weight loss show that the deeper layers of skin have been ruptured and they prevent skin retraction. There is no hope the problem will fix itself, as our skin loses elasticity with ageing.

The surgery usually lasts 2 to 4 hours. It is usually done under general anaesthesia, e.g. the patient falls asleep on the operating table and wakes up later in the ward.

As a slightly excess tone is given to the anterior abdominal wall, the patient’s abdomen may be tender during the recovery period. It is normal for the patients to keep leaned forward during the recovery. Healing of wounds usually lasts up to 14 days, during which all activities that may stretch or tighten abdominal muscles and skin should be avoided.

Patients should plan to stay away from work for about two weeks after the surgery.

Abdominoplasty will provide the best results for patients with normal bodyweight. For overweight patients, the results will be satisfactory, mostly improving the figure and simplifying the body care.

Abdominoplasty is not a treatment for obesity and does not settle the problem of excess weight.
